1978 Ford F-150 Custom

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 78 F-150 Custom, from my bestfriend. He and his dad had it for the last 25 or so years. It's been sitting for about the last 4-5yrs, so working on getting it running again, and on the road. Over time I'll fix the typical ford-rust areas, mostly in the bed.

Specs:

  • Short Bed
  • 4x4
  • 351M, 2bbl, Automatic Trans
  • 33x12.50 Yokohama Geolanders
  • Damn good interior

Well, tank is in, but experiencing some fuel issues... pretty sure main line is vapor locked due to the full tube headers... will re-toute the line & see if cures the issue.

Great photo op though!836e577a3ed5aab312ccb0da29bdfb5b.jpg

Well fuel system has been 100% rebuilt... so brake system finally failed after sitting for 5yrs & putting about 100 miles on her... front calipers froze then a rear line popped. Ordered all new or reman Calipers, Wheel Cylinders, Pads, Shoes, hardware, wheel bearings, races & seals... Also learned left rear axle bearing is about to fail 100%. So I also bought new rear axle bearing kits... had the rotors turned today to get rid of some minor pitting & light gouging.

Upon disassembly, front left inner wheel bearing came out in pieces when i tapped to remove the wheel/hub seal...

The summer brakejob turned into rear axle swap due to a warped housing end. Since then I’ve been enjoying using the truck & collecting more parts!

Well, with the first snow of the season, I learned the stock locking hubs aren't working. Just ordered a set of premium Mile Marker hubs, run them on my 96 Bronco and 84 CJ7, great price, and work great too.

That's a nice Ford and I'm no Ford guy! The trim rings on 33s will set that black truck off! Nice build!

Thanks man! I've known this truck basically my whole life. I've got 75% of the parts to fix the rust, and do a full repaint on it in. The 77 chop top should be sold, guy says he'll have the cash this Friday coming, plus I'm getting a new grill surround as part of the deal on the 77. With that, I'm still looking for a straight right/pass side front fender. just to save body work time, as I'll have enough time wrapped into the bed and cab corners (fixing old repairs) It'll go back the factory Raven Black, but in base/clear, Paint is probably a good year or two out, just due to other project priorities. We'll see...

Once the 77 leaves next week, I'm heading to NC to pickup another 460 and a rear bumper for the truck. I need a few parts of the other 460 to do the swap w/ my 0mile rebuilt motor.

So the trim rings I ordered won’t fit the black D Windows... so put them on the white wagon wheels... needs to be cleaned...

Well the 77 chop top is gone, i got this new grill shell in partial trade. Has a few minor scuffs from poor handling but 1000x better than the one on the truck.

Picked up another 460 to snag the edelbrock intake, oil pan/oil pickup/dipstick tube & motor mounts from.... was cheaper than buying it all individually

Well parts i wanted off 2nd motor are off & motor sold... wish I had room to keep it... was clean as hell inside!
94f50d39ece1aaad6c147e42b4d5c9ff.jpg

Started teardown of the motor I’m keeping, since it sat 6yrs without oil in it, tearing it down & going through everything to make sure all is in good order. Plus will upgrade cam/lifters, pushrods, add windage tray, new oilpump & straight up double roller timing set...
