Now, as for the 1949 CJ 3a, we picked that up in May 2018 from a family friend of my wife’s.

It was “restored” back in 1982 and has been living in a barn and driving around the POs farm since then. It is in really good shape. Since picking it up, I have done little things like add mirrors and mount the spare on the rear passenger side. I also ran fuel hose around the metal fuel lines to help insulate them to stop a vapor lock issue I was having. Recently I replaced the 6v battery and cleaned up all of the cable connections to help with a starting issue. I think the battery had a bad cell and was not cranking well. Seems to do better now.

No real plans for it other then new tires and keep it nice and drive it around as much as I can.

After backing it into the garage, I noticed some writing under the paint on the windshield vent.

So I took it off and traced it a bit to see better what it may have looked like. I think I am going to have a better artist fill out the text. “Flying W Ranch”. The ranch is still around up in PA. So I am learning a bit about it.

That’s amazing!! I love finding little glimpses into history like that.
I purchased some 1965 VA License plates about 6 yrs ago that ended up having 3 sets of DMV returns. They were signed & dated by DMV clerks in 65 with new tag # written on them too. Such as Customer turned in Truck tags for CONV tags.

Brrr! Snow still on the ground! Willys looks great though!

Thanks. And yes some snow is still on the ground. But it got up to about 38 today and sunny so a lot melted off the sidewalks and streets. Tomorrow should be near 50 so it might all be gone by then.

I haven’t been doing anything other than keeping it running. Replaced the points and carb and added mystery oil after bad flooding of the engine trying to start it while I had a bad ground. But all is good again

And took it to a historic site around my town

It will be at a friend’s wedding in a couple of weekends for pics, so I will wash it and get it ready to be the center of attention. Well, maybe not the center.

Took some time after work tonight to start removing the snow plow support parts on the from of my 3a. Got the hoop off. Cut through the bumper in 2 spots, but I can deal with that later. Almost have that horrible part on the bottom off. But I have about an i ch left to cut through on each side where it is welded to the frame rails. The cutting wheel can’t get to it without cutting the spring perches. Tried the reciprocating saw, but I don’t have a sharp enough blade. I really wish I had a plasma cutter.

Added a tow bar set up that I picked up today. Now I can take the Willys to parades and the shows that are further away without renting a trailer.

So I had an air leak that I thought was the exhaust manifold. It may have been. But I took the manifolds off and discovered a big problem. Anyone know where I can find an intake manifold as well as an exhaust manifold? I could probably get the exhaust manifold to work again. But it has a bit broken off around the bolt at the firewall side. Fun times with a 72 year old Jeep.

I was driving it last week and had a bunch of coolant burning out of the exhaust. Limped it home with the towbar shown above.

Today, I Pulled the head off and confirmed that I did indeed blow a head gasket on the L134. And it turns out that the PO did not install a thermostat.

Picked up my head from Classic Machine today. Evan did a great job on it. Now to break out the paint before installation.
